Instructions

The CURVULATOR (tm) is a set of 12 curved scoring
slots molded in one piece of sturdy 1/8" thick clear plastic ... 7
3/4" x 10 1/2" overall. Use it for making circular curved scores
at 1" intervals from 2" to 13" diameter. Can make the curved
scores on boxes like those shown below as well as other decorative shapes. A
scoring tool is shipped with every Curvulator. By the way, the scoring tool is
useful as a folding bone and the larger end can be used to score corrugated
cardboard. COMPLETE INSTRUCTIONS ARE INCLUDED IN EVERY CURVULATOR SHIPMENT.
NOTE: If you are making boxes with curved elements,
the straight scores needed to make boxes should be made on by placing the
cardstock against the guide rail on the side of the Boxmaker Originale (tm) platen marked "BOTTOM". The distance from the guide rail on the
"BOTTOM" side is essentially equal to the nominal spacing while the spacing on the "TOP" side is somewhat less.
YOU ARE PROBABLY FAMILIAR WITH THE WORK OF FRANK GEHRY WHO
RECENTLY INTRODUCED ALMOST UNBELIEVABLE SCULPTURAL CURVES INTO COMMERCIAL
ARCHITECTURE. HIS WONDERFUL "FORM FOLLOWS FANTASY" ARCHITECTURE MAY
BE
ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT ARTISTIC DEVELOPMENTS IN HISTORY. HE PROBABLY
UNDERSTANDS CURVES BETTER THAN YOU OR I -- BUT YOUR USE OF THE CURVULATOR CAN
HELP YOU BETTER UNDERSTAND AND USE THESE SHAPES.
- BASIC INSTRUCTIONS --
(1) Put the cardstock
to be scored on any relatively soft surface -- (even a few sheets
of newspaper will work) and between the
surface and the Curvulator.
(2) Put the Curvulator over the cardstock where
you want the curve postioned.
(3) Simply score the desired diameter curve into
the cardstock by using the proper slot as a guide for the scoring tool.
- Create your own specialty boxes in unusual, interesting shapes.
- Create your own architectural fantasy models. What a great project for
an art or architecture class.
- Expand your understanding of curved shapes and forms.
- Make your own one-of-a-kind toys, mobiles and constructions
- Use the same concepts and techniques as the Boxmaker Originale (tm) and Mini Boxmaker (tm) to make the basic boxes

MAKING
BOXES INTO MODEL HOUSES IS EASY |

|
| Just glue on two end
wall panels and a roof as shown above. You can leave tabs on
the walls which you will bend over and which can be glued to
the roof
You can draw windows, doors and
siding by hand and copy them on to label paper -- cutting
them out applying them wherever you like.
You can, of course, do the drawing
on a computer and print out the architectural details with
your printer on label paper. This technique make wonderful
models to any degree of sophistication. |

Here is a house with a porch -- made of 3 small boxes |

Another house built on a box |
 |
| Another building on a box. This is a model of a real diner in Harrison, NJ. My grandfather worked here before he had his own diner built in Newark, NJ. |
Here are my grandfather and grandmother in front of "Busse Grill" the diner they had built in Newark. Their daughter, Helen, was a waitress there. My mother met my father, a local milkman, there (1929) when he came in for early morning coffee before going on his route.
