School Bus Accidents: What You Need To Know

by Jo Rodriquez

When you put your child on a school bus each morning, you are entrusting the driver to safeguard your child to and from school. Sadly, school bus accidents do happen and can result in major injuries or even death. If your child is on the school bus when it gets into an accident, you need to know how to react. Here are some things you need to do:

Make Sure the Child Is Not Injured

Most importantly, you need to get your child to the emergency department for a complete medical evaluation. Although your child may not have any outward injuries, it is highly likely the child may have some internal issues. If nothing else, the child may suffer from some soreness. Nonetheless, you need to rule out any type of injury. If your child does have an injury, you need to have them treated, get instructions for follow-up care, and document those injuries to have in case you need to make a claim.

Collect Evidence

As the child's parent, you should receive some information about the school bus accident. This information should come directly from your school district. It may include some facts as to the cause of the accident, what steps the school district is taking after the accident, and other pertinent information. You need to hold on to these details as part of your evidence. You should also begin collecting evidence yourself. This can include witness statements from those who saw the accident, conversations with other parents of children who were on the bus, and photographs and video footage of the accident scene.

Keep Records of Your Child's Behavior and Healing

A school bus accident can be traumatic for a child. Physical injuries can be ongoing, so you need to make a note anytime your child mentions soreness or pain. This is helpful if your child has to miss certain physical activities such as sports. You also need to pay attention to any emotional damage your child may be experiencing. This can manifest as nightmares, anxiety, lack of interest in activities, and the like. Keep a journal of any issues your child is having as a result of the accident.

Contact an Attorney

Although the school district may promise to handle the aftermath of the accident, you may want to contact an attorney to find out what your options are or if you are entitled to any damages as a result of the accident. This will depend on the cause of the accident and the negligent party, but your attorney will help set you on the path of healing for your child. Contact a personal injury attorney for more information.
